The original 1936 booklet was printed in the basement of the Watts' Ravinia home. In addition to the opening "fable", Watts listed and illustrated many of Ravinia's native trees and plants for easy identification. It was part of a community program designed to educate residents on preserving the area's natural environment. Watts was joined in this endeavor by well-known landscape architect Jens Jensen.
This April 1980 historical reprint of two thousand copies was commissioned by the Park District of Highland Part Historical Society in conjunction with the Ravinia Garden Club. It was issued to highlight Ravinia School student efforts
to rename the adjacent school parkland which was shown as "A Nature Trail" in the original booklet. Their efforts were successful and the park was renamed the May T. Watts Nature Park.
