May Theilgaard Watts (1893-1975). Trail Guide: Forest Nature Trail. Lisle: Morton Arboretum, 1946.
1 booklet (16 p. : single col. ; 19 x 14 cm.)
The Sterling Morton Library of the Morton Arboretum
The trails in the Morton Arboretum were more than walking paths to May Watts. They were living classrooms where she would take her students to see and learn the unique characteristics of plants and animals along that trail. As an aid to these excursions and for those who preferred to explore the trails by themselves, Watts developed written guides to the various trails. The Forest Nature Trail Guide combines practical information on location, items of interest, and guide posts along the way. It also includes an extensive key to trees and their identification. And, like any good teacher, she offered a test at the end of the trail.
The original pen and ink drawing for the trail guide cover illustrates Watts' mastery of technical yet beautiful drawing.
