May Theilgaard Watts (1893-1975). Reading the Landscape of Europe. New York: Harper & Row, 1971.
vii, 315, [S-1] - S-19 p. : ill., maps ; 25 cm.
The Sterling Morton Library of the Morton Arboretum, RARE NA
This book of essays and illustrations was a retrospective work by May Watts based on her numerous trips through Europe. Watts' discovery of the various footpaths to be found throughout Europe became an integral part of her philosophy that Americans needed contemplative walking spaces. The inside back and front covers are delightful representations of various European footpaths The chapter on Britain contains an entertaining description of following a British public footpath. The American hikers found these paths unnerving as they were without right angles and rambled through private gardens and fields in an entirely un-American fashion.
